Using verb "To remember" in Marathi

In Marathi “To remember” is आठवणे(AThavaNe)

There are three ways in which we use verb "to remember"

1) Suppose a teacher meets his student after many years and says "You are from batch of 1970, right? I remember you."

2) A student living in a hostel writes letter to his mother; "Whenever I eat food at canteen I remember dishes you used to cook. I miss you."

3) A person helped you in your bad time. You will say him;"Thank you friend. I will always remember your favour".

In all the sentence we have used verb remember; but there is subtle difference in every use. 

In first sentence you say you have not forgotten something. 

In second case you say one event triggers or brings back memory of some other event.

In third sentence you explicitly assure of keeping something in mind. 

In Marathi sentence is formed differently in every case.

Case 1) In English we say 

I remember you. 

She remembers me.

Here verb "remember" is formed according to subject/doer of action. But in Marathi verb form “आठवणे” is formed as per object.

And the subject is used with preposition "To"

So this is exact opposite of English.

Subject in English sentence. With preposition “To”	Object in English sentence.	Verb form of आठवणे (AThavaNe) As per object
I  मला (malA )	You तू(tU)	like आठवतोस (AThavatos)
You तुला(tulA)	Me मी(mI)	like आठवतो  (AThavato )

Examples :- 

I remember you :- मला तू आठवतोस ( malA tU AThavatos )

You remember me :- तुला मी आठवतो (tulA mI AThavato)

We remember Mary :- आम्हाला मेरी आठवते (AmhAlA merI AThavate)

Mary remembers us :-  मेरीला आम्ही आठवतो ( merIlA AmhI AThavato )

These sentence can be formed in present continuous tense; without any change in meaning.

We remember Mary :- आम्हाला मेरी आठवते आहे (AmhAlA merI AThavate Ahe)

Mary remembers us :-  मेरीला आम्ही आठवतो आहोत ( merIlA AmhI AThavato Ahot)

This is why some Marathi people when speaking in English tend to say "I am remembering you";"He is remembering me" etc. :)

We can also use phrase लक्षात असणे(lakShAt asaNe) which means "to have in ones mind".

Form of असणे( asaNe) is created as per gender and multiplicity of object.

सामान्यरूप of possessive form of subject is used e.g.  माझ्या,तुझ्या, त्याच्या, कौशिकच्या, मेरीच्या

Examples :- 

I remember you :- तू माझ्या लक्षात आहेस ( tU mAjhyA lakShAt Ahes

You remember me :- मी तुझ्या लक्षात आहे ( mI tujhyA lakShAt Ahe )

Case 2) 

In second case you say one event triggers or brings back memory of some other event.

In Marathi we use phrase आठवण येणे(AThavaN yeNe).

आठवण (AThavaN) means remembrance. It is feminine-singular noun.

We use form of noun or pronoun to indicate possession i.e माझी, तुझी, त्याची, कौशिकची etc. As आठवण (AThavaN) is feminine-singular we use only feminine-singular form indicating possession.

Similarly form of verb येणे(yeNe) is also feminine-singular.

So English sentence "I remember you" is said in Marathi as if saying "Your remembrance come to me" :)

Examples :- 

I remember you :- मला तुझी आठवण येते ( malA tujhI AThavaN yete )

You remember me :- तुला माझी आठवण येते (tulA mAjhI AThavaN yete )

We remember Mary :- आम्हाला मेरीची आठवण येते (AmhAlA merIchI AThavaN yete )

Mary remembers us :-  मेरीला आमची आठवण येते (merIlA AmachI AThavaN yete)

In past tense we can form similar sentences.

Mary remembered us:-  मेरीला आमची आठवण आली (merIlA AmachI AThavaN AlI)

Mary will remember us:-  मेरीला आमची आठवण येईल (merIlA AmachI AThavaN yeIl)

This is the way you say in Marathi sentences like "I miss..","He missed .."

Peter misses his friend :- पीटरला त्याच्या मित्रांची आठवण येते (pITaralA tyAchyA mitrAMchI AThavaN yete 

She missed her mother a lot:- तीला तीच्या आईची खूप आठवण आली ( tIlA tIchyA AIchI khUp AThavaN AlI )

Case 3) 

In third case you explicitly assure of keeping something in mind.

Here in Marathi we use phrase लक्षात ठेवणे (lakShAt ThevaNe) which is as good as saying "to keep in mind".

Verb form of ठेवणे (ThevaNe) is created as per pertaining rule for that tense.  

Examples :- 

I will remember your favour/ I will keep in mind your favour  :-  

मी तुझे उपकार लक्षात ठेवीन (mI tujhe upakAr lakShAt ThevIn)

He always remembered my advice / He always kept in mind my advice :- 

त्याने माझा सल्ला नेहमी लक्षात ठेवला (tyAne mAjhA sallA nehamI lakShAt ThevalA)
