Addressing in-laws
Note About भाचा-पुतण्या(bhAchA-putaNyA)
Only man will call his brother's son as पुतण्या(putaNyA) and brother's daughter as पुतणी(putaNI).
But a lady will call her brother's son as भाचा(bhAchA) and brother's daughter as भाची(bhAchI).
Man and Lady both will call sister's son as भाचा(bhAchA) and sister's daughter as भाची(bhAchI).
So you can remember the relationship-pairs as
काका - पुतण्या/पुतणी kAkA-putaNyA/putaNI
मामा - भाचा/भाची (mAmA-bhAchA/bhAchI)
मावशी - भाचा/भाची ( mAvashI-bhAchA/bhAchI )
आत्या - भाचा/भाची (AtyA-bhAchA/bhAchI)

In-laws' house सासर (sAsar )
Girl's parents' house माहेर ( mAher )
Listen words in this lesson at

Addressing in-laws
सासरे (sAsare) and सासू (sAsu) is name of relation. But
actual words for calling them is सासरेबुवा ("sAsarebuva" ) and सासुबाई (
"sAsubAI") respectively. But it is too old stye. Especially in learned
families or urban families we simply call them बाबा(bAbA) and आई (AI) to show
the closeness.
It is a difference in Indian culture and western Indian . In India we comfortably call any unknown lady as काकू (kAkU) or मावशी (mAvashI) i.e aunty and an unknown gentleman as काका(kAkA) i.e. uncle. In western society this will sound quite odd.
In
India family members share closer relations. Relations which in US
would be called as "very extended family" or just "relation"; can be too
close in India.

DeleteAnup, sorry for wrong answer. It is bhAchA (if boy) or bhAchI (if girl)
In Hindi its
DeleteChacha - Bhatija

Maushi - Bhaacha?
That is how languages are. There are few commonalities some differences.
DeleteWrong! In hindi it's Maasi- Bhaanja And Bhuaa - Bhatija.

ReplyDeleteshouldn't it be "maosaji".
"मावसा" (mAvasA) in not very common In Marathi. In few regions having influence of Hindi, you can hear this word used in Marathi. Generally people use "kAkA". But I added that word now in list. Thanks.
DeleteI would like to know your feedback in detail. So can you please mail me at learnmarathifast@gmail.com
Sasubai tumhi tumche sagle dagine mla diya... Wat does it mean
ReplyDeleteIt means, "(please) Give me all your jewelry (dear) mother-in-law".
DeleteI've added the "please" and the "dear" in brackets because, it's not clear from the context whether it's a demand or a request.
The literal translation would be, "Give me all your jewelry mother-in-law".
