My translation
Once upon a
time in a city lived a Brahman. He had five daughters-in-law. Shravan month had
begun. It was the day of “naag-panchami”. To celebrate the day some
daughters-in-law had gone to their father’s place, some had gone to
grandfather’s place. Thus all had gone except the last one. She had no relative
from her father’s side. She was very gloomy. She prayed Lord Cobra and said “He
is my relative; he will come to take me to his place”.
Lord Cobra
felt sympathy for her. He morphed himself as a Brahmin and arrived at her home
to take her with him. Father-in-law was puzzled. Where was this relative of hers
for so long? He inquired sister-in-law.
She said that he was her uncle.
Father-in-law
allowed and bid them farewell. Morphed uncle took her to his residence in an
anthill. He morphed back as a cobra and settled her on his hood. He ordered his
family members not to bite her.
Female cobra
was pregnant. One day labour pains started. The girl was asked to help by holding
lantern. Female cobra gave birth to young ones. Seeing many young cobras
squirming she was very afraid. She dropped the lantern and tails of
young cobras got burned. Female cobra was indignant. She reported incidence to her
husband. He said calmly that he will soon he send back to her in-laws house. He
offered her lot of wealth. He morphed as a man and carried her back to in-laws
house.
Time passed
and young cobras grew up. They asked her mother why were their tails are cut.
Mother narrated the incidents. Cobras were furious. They sneaked into her house
to take revenge. But that was day of “nag-panchami”. She had drawn sketches of cobras on a board
& wall; worshiped them; offered milk & popped-rice. She offered other sweets.
Cobras were
watching this when she bowed & prayed, “My Lord Cobra, make my brothers
happy; wherever they may be.” They were
pleased to see her devotion. They were no more angry; rather sympathetic for
her. They stayed at her house overnight. Next day at the dawn they kept a
garland of precious stone at the worship plate and disappeared. Next day she
saw the garland and wore it very happily.
