My translation
Once upon a
time a city was ruled by a king who was devotee for Lord Shiva. He once wished
to fill “garbhaguha” (sanctum sanctorum) of Lord Shiva’s temple with milk. But
he was worried about achieving it. His minister gave him an idea. Thus king made an announcement
- every person from the town should bring all the milk they have for Lord Shiva’s
worship. People became afraid by this royal order. Nobody understood how to
follow this order. So on next day nobody allowed their family member to drink
milk; children were not allowed to be fed milk. Even calves were not allowed to be fed by cows. Whole milk
from town was taken to temple and poured into “garbhagruha”. But it was not filled.
But in
afternoon miracle happened.
There was an
old lady. She finished her daily chores; fed the babies and young ones of her
family; gave grass to cows; other family members had the meal. Everyone was
satisfied. Finally she decided to go to temple for worship. She took flowers,
few grains of rice and a small bowl of milk. She reached temple; worshiped lord with full devotion and finally prayed to God, “My Lord, The king has offered so much milk into your “garbhagruha”. It is not yet filled. I know my little
milk will not make much difference. Yet I am offering you whatever I could.” So
she said and poured milk into “garbhagruha” and came back home.
But a miracle
was seen. “Garbhagruha” was overflowing. Priest informed this to king. But
nobody understood the reason. Next Monday
king appointed soldiers around temple to investigate. Same miracle happened but
could not understand why. Next Monday King himself sat next to “garbhagruha”. He
saw that when old lady offered her milk, it started overflowing. King held her
hand. Old lady was frightened. King told her not be afraid and tell him the
reason.
She told, “Because
of your order babies, young ones and calves remained hungry; their souls
pained. Elders were agitated and were cursing you. God does not like it. That is why
it did not overflow. So what is the solution? Let milk be fed to babies, calves
and young ones. Let everyone be satisfied. Then only Lord will be pleased and garbhariha
will overflow.”
King freed
the old lady and made a new announcement.
On fourth Monday
King worshiped in temple. Only after feeding babies, young children and calves the milk was offered at temple. With folded hands and closed eyes he prayed
lord. When he opened eyes he could not believe his – garbhariha had started
overflowing. King was pleased.
He gave away
awards to old lady. She lived happily ever after with her family.
May we be
blessed to live forever as a happy family.
