After Learning Simple Present Tense of “To be in Marathi, it is easy to march toward learning Present Continuous tense (PCT) in Marathi.

In English PCT sentence is formed as follows :-
“Pronoun”
“form of To be”
“Verb+-ing”

am
doing

Similarly in Marathi PCT sentence is formed as follows :-

“Pronoun”
“form of verb in Simple Present Tense”
“form of рдЕрд╕рдгे (asaNe)”

рдоी
рдХрд░рддो
рдЖрд╣े

I ->  рдоी    Do -> рдХрд░  Am -> рдЖрд╣े

Let us take another example. He eats in Marathi is рддो рдЦाрддो. Form of рдЕрд╕рдгे(asaNe) for He is "рдЖрд╣े"(Ahe)
So, рддो рдЦाрддो followed by рдЖрд╣े  -> рддो рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣े  is Present Continuous ( He is eating)

Similarly рддी рд░рдбрддे --> рддी рд░рдбрддे рдЖрд╣े (tI raDate Ahe) is Present Continuous ( She is cying)

There are few exception for pronoun "You" and "They"

1)  Exception for “You”
You (male) eat --> рддू рдЦाрддोрд╕  (tU khAtos )
The form of рдЕрд╕рдгे(asaNe) for You is рдЖрд╣ेрд╕(Ahes). So as per above rule Present continuous sentence will be “рддू рдЦाрддोрд╕ рдЖрд╣ेрд╕”. But exception is that ending рд╕(s) is not used in verb рдЦाрддो .
Sentence will be “рддू рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣ेрд╕”.

2) Exception for "They"
They (plural of He/She/It) eat --> рддे/рдд्рдпा/рддी рдЦाрддाрдд  (te/tyA/ I khAtAt )
The form of рдЕрд╕рдгे(asaNe) for You is рдЖрд╣ेрдд (Ahet). So as per above rule Present continuous sentence will be “рддे/рдд्рдпा/рддी рдЦाрддाрдд рдЖрд╣ेрдд”.
But exception is that ending рддाрдд (tAt) is not used in verb рдЦा. Instead only рдд(t) is used.
Sentence will be рддे/рдд्рдпा/рддी рдЦाрдд рдЖрд╣ेрдд”.

So below chart lists the suffixes of present continuous (which is internally combination of suffixes for general verb and “to be” in Present continuous).
Exceptions highlighted.

Style 2 of present continuous tense
Second style of present continuous tense is same as above. Only difference is that, for all nouns and pronouns the suffix for verb is рдд(t).
Both styles are correct and part of standard Marathi.
So this form is bit simpler way for new learner.

I ( male) am doing.
Style 1 ->рдоी рдХрд░рддो рдЖрд╣े  (mI karato Ahe)
Style 2 ->рдоी рдХрд░рдд рдЖрд╣े  (mI karat Ahe)

She is speaking.
Style 1-> рддी рдмोрд▓рддे рдЖрд╣े (tI bolate Ahe)
Style 2-> рддी рдмोрд▓рдд рдЖрд╣े (tI bolat Ahe)

It is moving.
Style 1->рддे рд╣рд▓рддे рдЖрд╣े (te halate Ahe)
Style 2->рддे рд╣рд▓рдд рдЖрд╣े (te halat Ahe)

You (male) are crying.
Style 1->рддू рд░рдбрддो рдЖрд╣ेрд╕ (tU raDato Ahes)
Style 2->рддू рд░рдбрдд рдЖрд╣ेрд╕ (tU raDat Ahes)

  1. So, “рддो рдЦाрддो” followed by “рдЖрд╣े” -> “рддो рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣े” is Present Continuous ( I am eating)

    Is it I am eating or he is eating?
    if It is I am eating, in matathi " Mi khatho ahe???
    I am a beginner , just my doubt only.
    Thanks

    1. If you check above table again,
      "рддो рдЦाрддो" -> "He eats".
      So “рддो рдЦाрддो” followed by “рдЖрд╣े” ->“рддो рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣े” is "He is eating"

      Similarly,
      "рдоी рдЦाрддो" -> I eat
      So "рдоी рдЦाрддो" followed by “рдЖрд╣े” -> "рдоी рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣े" is "I am eating"

  2. how will i write 'i am trying to study'?

    Replies
    1. To try -> рдк्рд░рдпрдд्рди рдХрд░рдгे ( prayatna karaNe )
      To study -> рдЕрдн्рдпाрд╕ рдХрд░рдгे ( abhyAs karaNe )

      I am trying -> рдоी рдк्рд░рдпрдд्рди рдХрд░рдд рдЖрд╣े (mI prayatna karat Ahe)
      I am trying to study -> рдоी рдЕрдн्рдпाрд╕ рдХрд░ाрдпрдЪा рдк्рд░рдпрдд्рди рдХрд░рдд рдЖрд╣े (mI abhyAs karAyachA prayatna karat Ahe )

      Here you have used two verbs. "Try" is main verb and "study" is secondary verb. To understand how the form of verb study became "рдХрд░ाрдпрдЪा" you may refer

    1. Hi Kesavan,
      Thanks for using my blog and appreciation.

      You may contact me on :- learnmarathifast@gmail.com
      I would like to know more detailed feedback from you like what things you found good, what needs to explained better, what is missing and any other opinion you wish to share.

      I am thinking of adding audio/video clips. But it is quite bigger task than writing the post. Looking at my current work-schedule it might take quite long.
      Also for Indians, pronunciation will not be much problem.
      But I found few videos on you tube, check if you feel them useful.

      waiting for your reply,

  6. Hello Kaushik,

    Is it possible for you to publish a list of words with their gender. I often get confused while speaking. I use mostly masculine gender in all the sentences. e.g, Tujhe shoes kuta gele, Bus gela..etc...

    1. This is the peculiar problem of Marathi Learners. To address this I started creating list of Marathi nouns, their gender and plural forms. But I soon realized that this is mammoth task with thousands of nouns in Marathi like any other language. So a good dictionary is permanent and proper solution.

      The list which I started to create is uploaded as an excel sheet at
      https://sites.google.com/site/learnmarathionline/home/nouns-gender-plural-and-forms-for-prepositions
      Download the excel sheet to view it correctly.
      Excel sheet is not up-to-date. I will keep adding more and more nouns. So please check this link frequently to see newly added nouns.

      I would appreciate if you can mail me on learnmarathifast@gmail.com so that we can discuss more about your feedback and suggestions.

  7. Dear kaushik,
    In previous pages the verb suffix which is to be added with " you" is " tos " , but in this chapter you have mentioned the sentence " tu radto aahes"
    My question is , is something wrong with the line " tu radtos aahes" cuz it just fits in the grammer you have mentioned in the previouus chapters.
    Waiting for your reply.

    1. Yes, "tu radtos aahes" is grammatically in-correct.
      This is exception for you.

      I explained two exceptions in this lesson :-
      1) Exception for “You”"
      2) Exception for “They”

      Do let me now if it is not clear. You may mail me on learnmarathifast@gmail.com

      They are going -> рддे/ рдд्рдпा/ рддी рдЬाрдд рдЖрд╣ेрдд

  10. So, “рддो рдЦाрддो” followed by “рдЖрд╣े” -> “рддो рдЦाрддो рдЖрд╣े” is Present Continuous ( I am eating)

    In this sentence I think it will be "He is Eating" instead of "I am eating"

  13. Hi Kaushik,

    I find your blog very useful. I have a question - where do we use verb forms like kartoy/boltoy?

    Also, one suggestion - can you embed the Youtube/soundcloud links on the page as frames so that one doesn't have to browse away from page, it breaks the continuity.

    Thanks,
